Did negligent security contribute to this Columbus apartment shooting? Read Our Legal Take to find out if the victim may have a claim for compensation.

A man was reportedly injured after gunfire erupted during a party at the Whisperwood Apartments in Columbus Monday, May 30, 2016.

According to WTVM News, “one person was shot Monday afternoon at Whisperwood Apartments on the 6000 block of Flat Rock Rd.” The victim apparently suffered a gunshot wound to the arm after “a fight broke out at a party.”

“He was sitting at the pool when he heard a popping sound and then felt the pain in his arm,” Police Sgt. Art Sheldon told media.

Police have not yet identified a gunman, presumably leaving residents concerned for their safety. Per WTVM.com, a robbery-shooting apparently occurred at the same complex in January 2015.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. Given the reported history of gun-related activity on property, The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those at the apartment complex and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • Was apartment security and management aware of the party? What security measures, such as guest screening, gated-entry, surveillance cameras, and security patrols, were in place to protect residents and guests at the time of the shooting?
  • Following any prior incidents of violence on property, were any additional security precautions implemented by the apartment complex owner or management company to deter crime?

By law, property owners in Georgia are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm.  Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management company failed to provide adequate security, the victim may elect to seek justice and pursue legal claims for injuries.

Based upon its long, extensive, and successful experience in handling negligent security cases against property owners in the State of Georgia, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed.
