Gunfire erupted “at [a]…Gas Station on Cleveland Avenue Saturday afternoon,” September 15, 2018, according to 11 Alive. Responding officers discovered Mr. Clay suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to the hospital, where he tragically succumbed to fatal injuries.

Atlanta police told the AJC they are now searching for two persons of interest.

A staggering number of violent crimes are plaguing Georgia convenience stores. It’s time owners and managers make the safety and security of staff and customers their first priority.

In August 2018, 13 WMAZ reports, 21-year-old Macon convenience store clerk, Waqar Ali, was shot and killed during his shift. The tragedy occurred only days after Alpeshkumar Prajapati was reportedly shot in a separate Macon convenience store shooting.

Two Augusta teenagers were injured in a convenience store shooting in August 2018, according to The Augusta Chronicle.

In June 2018, 11 Alive reports, three people were injured in an Atlanta convenience store shooting.

Convenience store patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises of the establishment they are visiting. By law, Georgia property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. For example, should a store or gas station owner have knowledge of prior crime on or near property, they have a responsibility to implement reasonable security precautions to protect employees and patrons from future crime. Security measures may include: bright lighting, metal detectors, clear windows, a visible security guard or off-duty police officer, visible sight lines, and surveillance cameras. Should a convenience store owner fail in this critical duty, they may be held civilly liable for any assaults, injuries or wrongful deaths which occur as a consequence.

Neighbors near a high-crime Atlanta gas station are calling for an end to violence following an apparent string of shootings over the last few months.

According to  WSBTV 2,  a “Chevron…located on the corner of Lakewood Avenue and Jonesboro Road” has been the subject of three shooting investigations in the last four months. Residents voiced concerns with media, “saying it’s too dangerous to even drive by.”

The apparent history of criminal activity at the gas station raises grave questions over security measures at the property.

  • Has there been prior criminal activity on or near property? If so, what additional security measures could be implemented to reduce such crime on property in the future?
  • Are all security features, such as lighting, fencing and surveillance cameras, in place and working?
  • Is the gas station properly staffed with enough employees to both assist patrons and monitor the property?
  • Is a security guard or off-duty police officer visibly stationed on the premises?
  • Does the gas station provide bright lighting at all service areas?
  • Are the gas pumps, air pressure tanks, and other service areas clearly visible to gas station employees?
  • Do employees utilize a bulletproof pass-through window for late-night cash transactions?
